Bootcamp Prep serves as preparation for students who want to enroll in the immersive software engineering course. Although not a prerequisite, completing Bootcamp Prep will increase your likelihood of getting accepted into the main program.

The curriculum includes a series of discussions, workshops, coding challenges, and a final project. It will give you a taste of the full program, which has a similar format. The course covers programming fundamentals such as functions, data types, loops, objects, and arrays.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bootcamp Prep is currently only offered online. It costs $199, and it can be taken in a week, a month, or at your own pace.

Software Engineering Immersive

The curriculum of the immersive software engineering course has three phases. These are called Foundations, Junior Phase, and Senior Phase. Students need to complete all the activities of one phase before they can proceed to the next.

In the Foundations phase, students attend a series of workshops, where they will learn the basics of HTML, CSS, the Document Object Model (DOM), and JavaScript. They will be given frequent assignments to assess their progress.

In the Junior Phase, students learn advanced programming concepts, with a particular focus on algorithms, data structures, and web development technologies. Besides participating in a series of discussions, you’ll partner with other students for three major pair programming assignments, including a final project.

The Senior Phase focuses mainly on career development. In this stage, students will build up their portfolios by developing their own e-commerce systems and by taking part in a programming series called Stackathon. They will also receive career coaching in the form of resume building, mock interviews, and job application workshops.

Graduating from this bootcamp guarantees a strong portfolio. And, since technical skills are nothing without soft skills, the skills you’ll build in project management, communication, time management and prioritization, and conflict resolution will complement your portfolio as you search for a job after graduation.

Admissions: How Do You Get Accepted to the Grace Hopper Program?

There are several requirements you must meet before you can enroll in the Grace Hopper Program. For one, the program is women-only, so men will have to look elsewhere. Grace Hopper defines “women” as anyone who identifies as female. This includes transgender, genderqueer, and non-binary individuals.

This qualification, along with a passion for coding, is all you need to start your application.

Grace Hopper Program Application Process

The application process consists of preparation, the application itself, an assessment, and an interview. In the preparation step, you’ll need to develop an understanding of programming concepts such as loops, variables, conditionals, functions, and recursions.

If you’re a beginner, it would be wise to brush up on the fundamentals. Fortunately, the Grace Hopper Program has learning resources on its website to help students prepare. To increase your chance of getting accepted, you can also take the Bootcamp Prep course.

The second step is the application itself. You can apply through Grace Hopper’s website, which usually takes about 45 minutes. After submitting your application, you will be sent an email with a link to the online assessment.

The assessment is a 75-minute exam that contains six coding challenges. If you do well enough, you will be invited for an interview.

Grace Hopper Program Interview

Like the previous steps, the interview process is conducted online. Aside from assessing your technical skills, the interviewer will evaluate your behavior to determine whether you have the work ethic and passion necessary for the software engineering field. This will give you a chance to convince the interviewer that you’re a good fit for the program.

Paying for the Grace Hopper Program

The Grace Hopper Program offers several payment methods for enrollees. Your options are upfront payment, an income share agreement, private loans, and scholarships.

Upfront Payment

The Bootcamp Prep course costs $199 and should be paid upfront. The cost of the Software Engineering Immersive course is $17,910. You’ll have to put $2,000 down to secure your spot in the program, and the rest comes due before classes start.

Income Share Agreement (ISA)

One option to consider if you can’t afford the upfront cost is an ISA. You’ll still need to make a $2,000 deposit, but you can hold off on paying the remainder until after you land a tech job.

The catch, however, is that this option is more expensive. You’ll be paying up to $27,843 depending on your salary. An ISA calculator is available on the Grace Hopper Program website so that you can calculate your exact tuition costs.

Private Loan Providers

Alternatively, you can apply for a private loan through one of the program’s lending partners, either Climb Credit or Ascent Funding. You can visit the website to learn more about each of these providers.

Scholarships

The Grace Hopper Program also offers scholarships through its vast network of partners. Currently, the program has scholarships available for women, gender non-conforming individuals, and veterans.

What Makes the Grace Hopper Program Unique?

The comprehensive curriculum of the Grace Hopper Program ensures that anyone who graduates from the immersive course has the technical skills to be a software engineer. Graduates will also have useful real-world projects to show for their time at Grace Hopper, as well as experience with the popular pair programming approach to software development.

If you’re a woman who wants full-time, immersive, practical, and collaborative training in software engineering, the Grace Hopper Program may be exactly what you’re looking for.
